WORLD COAL CARRYING CHAMPIONSHIPS – RULES

ALL COMPETITORS MUST READ AND ADHERE TO THE RULES OF THE WORLD COAL CARRYING CHAMPIONSHIPS

FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION OF THE RUNNER CONCERNED.

In particular the Gawthorpe Maypole Committee, organisers of the Gawthorpe World Coal Carrying Championship have ruled that there will be:

‘NO COACHING AT ANY TIME ON THE COURSE, SHOULD THIS HAPPEN THEIR RUNNER WILL BE DISQUALIFIED’

PLEASE NOTE: ‘THE COURSE’ IS DEFINED BY ALL THAT ROAD BETWEEN THE B6128 – OWL LANE, OSSETT, OUTSIDE THE ROYAL OAK PUBLIC HOUSE; TURNING LEFT INTO LEEDS ROAD AT THE JUNCTION FOR GAWTHORPE AND CONTINUING UP HIGH STREET TO THE MAYPOLE GREEN, HIGH STREET, GAWTHORPE – THE WIDTH OF THE COURSE IS KERB TO KERB ON EACH SIDE OF BOTH CARRIAGEWAYS. THE COURSE EXTENDS FOR 1013.38 METRES.

The Committee recognises that a coach can be a great asset during training, but once you enter the Start Line of the Coal Carrying race you are to be on your own, apart from other competitors officially entered into that race.  As detailed in the RULES, RUNNING ALONG THE PAVEMENT TO PROVIDE COACHING SUPPORT, (NOT ON THE COURSEuntil reaching the Boot and Shoe Public House, High Street, Gawthorpe is allowed, where coaches are to retire their help.

Other than this you are NOT allowed to get outside help or instruction, COACHING includes getting paced by someone on the course, not officially in the race, or having anyone convey advice, information or direct or indirect help to a coal carrier by any means, including technical communication devices – these are all classed as ‘coaching’ and are not allowed on the course as defined above.

IF DISQUALIFICATION OCCURS AFTER PRIZES HAVE BEEN AWARDED, ALL MONIES PAID OUT TO THE WINNER, ALONG WITH ANY PERPETUAL AND REPLICA TROPHIES AWARDED, MUST BE RETURNED TO THE ORGANISERS AT THE EARLIEST CONVENIENCE.
