Welcome! – to the 60th World Coal Carrying Championships – Easter Monday 10th April 2023 and the 149th Gawthorpe Maypole Procession – Saturday 13th May 2023
Hello and welcome to Gawthorpe Maypole site, the home of the Gawthorpe Maypole Procession and World Coal Carrying Championships. Gawthorpe is situated just off the A638 approximately halfway between Junction 40 of the M1 and Dewsbury. Due to the Coronation of King Charles III, the Mayday celebrations this year will be held on Saturday 13th May 2023, one week later than usual, and it will also host the World Coal Carrying Championships as it does every Easter Monday.
The World Coal Carrying Championships are recognised by The Guinness Book of World Records and is currently sponsored by Eric F Box Funeral Directors Limited.
